The town of Irving was launched with a public lot auction on December 19, 1903. The railroad depot and one house were the only two buildings in the town at that time. Bidders purchased about 50 lots that day. By early 1904 construction had begun along Main Street.

This plat map shows the layout of the town. It was submitted to Dallas County by Irving's founders J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown in May 1902.
In the right foreground of this view of the west side of the S. 100 block of Main Street, c. 1908, is some corral-style fencing that surrounds a water well in the middle of the intersection of Main and First Streets. Later, a water tank and pump house were built over the well and served as Irving's first municipal water supply.

The monument stood on Main Street just north of its intersection with First (Irving Blvd.) Street.
The Irving Lion's Club funded a memorial to honor Irvingites who gave their lives in battle during WWII. A plaque on the monument listed the names of those who died.
